Is dental surgery painful for dogs?
After a routine cleaning, your mouth can be a little sore. When your pet has a dental cleaning or dental procedure, their mouth will be tender as well.
What should I expect after my dogs dental surgery?
Your pet should begin recovering from the anesthetic within a few hours, though it can take 24-48 hours to fully recover. During this time, your pet will most likely seem drowsy and may lack an appetite. If she remains drowsy, disoriented, or lacking in appetite after 24 hours, give us a call right away.

Senior dogs and cats with advanced PD affecting the entire mouth often require full-mouth extractions. Fortunately, these patients usually thrive once their mouth is pain-free.
Do dogs need antibiotics after tooth extraction?
Antibiotics: Some animals with evidence of severe subgingival infection may require antibiotics for 10 days or so following their teeth cleaning. This decision is made on a case by case basis, and your companion may or may not need to go home on antibiotics.
Do dogs have to stay overnight after surgery?
After arriving at home, you should keep your dog warm and comfortable by providing a soft clean bed, ideally in a quiet and draft-free room at a comfortable room temperature (68-75°F or 20-24°C). Your dog should remain indoors overnight, going outside only for short leash walks as needed to urinate and defecate.

Pets wake up almost immediately after the procedure is completed, as most anesthetics are reversible. Pets could experience fatigue for 12-24hrs after waking up from anesthesia.
Should I sleep with my dog after surgery?
It is not necessary to stay up, or sleep next to your pet and you can leave your dog alone after surgery for short periods as long as they aren’t likely to lick their stitches. In fact, many dogs will appreciate some quiet time and the opportunity to sleep after the anaesthetic.
