Umbilicoplasty is a procedure that changes the appearance of your bellybutton. It was originally used to treat umbilical hernias in infants. In recent years, it’s become a popular cosmetic surgery. The goal of umbilicoplasty is to give the bellybutton a more vertical shape instead of a horizontal one.
Scarring from previous surgery is another frequent cause of an ugly belly button. If you’ve had any sort of laparoscopic surgery or repair of an umbilical hernia, you will have a scar at the top of your belly button. Revision of this scar may help the belly button look more attractive.
Belly Button Surgery Cost
Hernia repairs are often viewed as medically necessary procedures. If the belly button surgery is deemed to be a strictly cosmetic procedure, the cost can range from $2,500 to $5,000 – and swell from $8,000 to $12,000 as part of a tummy tuck procedure.
It’s normal for the area to look swollen and even a bit crusty after surgery, and it may take as long as 6 months for the belly button to heal.
Lie on back with hands under tailbone; lift legs straight up toward ceiling, knees slightly bent. Pull belly button toward spine, and slowly lower legs until they’re about six inches off ground, as shown, keeping lower back on floor at all times. Return to start, and repeat. Do two sets of 15 reps.
Because a belly button is essentially a weak point in the abdomen, the extra pressure could cause an “innie” belly button to become an “outie.” However, this occurrence usually reverts after a woman gives birth. Some women do notice their belly button changes shape after pregnancy.
Do some resistance training. Loose skin on the stomach area could be due to reduced body mass. Resistance and strength training exercises such as squats, planks, leg raises, deadlifts, and bicycle crunches help you create a defined belly area. Tighten your belly skin with massages and scrubs.
Muscle tightness – Muscles plication (or tightening) is usually a part of abdominoplasty. Either failure of the sutures or some laxity can cause a bulge. If the change in your contour was sudden or if you felt a pop – think about the plication having ruptured.
Can a plastic surgeon fix an umbilical hernia?
Umbilical Hernia Procedure
Most umbilical hernias that are fixed are repaired by general surgeons. In some cases they are repaired by plastic surgeons at the time of a tummy tuck.
In one study in 2017 in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, an oval-shaped belly button was deemed the most attractive.
But it’s really mostly random, as the umbilical cord is always clamped well away from the navel and doesn’t usually affect innie or outie status. The shape of the belly button a person ends up with, however, is determined by how the umbilical cord was attached, not where it was cut.
