Do they give you painkillers for LASIK?
After LASIK surgery, you may be given prescription pain medication or recommended certain over-the-counter pain relievers. Be sure to take these pain relievers as directed to help minimize any sensations of discomfort as they arise.
Do they give you a sedative before LASIK?
Before the LASIK procedure begins, patients may be offered a very mild oral sedative. This sedative will help you feel relaxed while remaining awake. Patients will then be given anesthetic eye drops that numb the eyes.
What do they give you after LASIK?
At the first postoperative visit, your doctor will remove the eye shield, test your vision, and examine your eye. Your doctor may give you one or more types of eye drops to take at home to help prevent infection and/or inflammation. You may also be advised to use artificial tears to help lubricate the eye.
Are you sedated during LASIK?
There is not much benefit to general anesthesia during LASIK, which is why the vast majority of patients remain awake during their short surgery. If you are worried about your procedure, you will have the option to receive a mild sedative or take medication to help calm any fear you may have.
Can I take a sleeping pill after LASIK?
You will be offered a mild sedative pill to help you relax for your procedure. It’s usually a good idea for patients because the pill helps them relax some and it helps them take an excellent nap afterwards. Often times, patients report that their post-LASIK nap was one of the best naps they’ve had in a long time!
Do they give you Xanax for LASIK?
Patients having any type of laser eye surgery are given Xanax to calm their nerves. For cataract surgery, patients are not put to sleep because they need to fixate on a light during the surgery. Instead, they are given IV sedation, Versed, to help them feel calm and relaxed.
Do you get put to sleep for laser eye surgery?
You’ll be fully awake and conscious during the treatment, and the anaesthetic will make the process virtually pain free. The name laser eye surgery can be misleading as there’s no actual surgery involved. It’s more of a treatment.

How soon after LASIK can I shower?
Generally speaking, you should wait at least 24 hours after LASIK before washing your face. This is the same guideline that we give our patients for showering. As with showering, you need to avoid getting soap and water in your eyes for a minimum of several days.
